  • The Smiths were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1982. Consisting of vocalist Morrissey, guitarist Johnny Marr, bassist Andy Rourke, and drummer Mike Joyce, critics consider the band one of the most important to emerge from the British independent music scene of the 1980s. Internal tensions led to their break up in 1987 and subsequent offers to reunite have been refused.

Some 21 years since the first The Smiths Top 100 and eight years since the last, RC returns for another shot at The Smiths' hierarchy of needs. This feature brings together two gurus, melding minds to compose a new list: Mark Thompson, who compiled the original must-haves in 1992, and Billy Albert, who updated it in 2005.

In contrast to the last update, we don't need to highlight the significance that this fine band holds in the history of popular music. The Smiths are up there with the most collectable artists of the 80s, and their rarities perform respectably against those who have came before them. They are one of those rare acts whose musical achievements are likely to stand the test of time.

One of the main changes since 2005 is the rise in value and awareness of many of the lesser-known test pressings, particularly those for later releases. Some exciting new discoveries have appeared and have become new additions to the list of holy artefacts, and only five of the original Top 10 retain their status, the other five having been pushed down the pecking order. Furthermore, many of the 7' test pressings for singles such as Bigmouth Strikes Again and beyond, which wouldn't have been used by Rough Trade for promotional purposes, have been teased out of the hands of former employees within the music industry and have hit the market.

On the flipside, this has presented the compilers of this update with a problem. Previous listings were compiled on the basis of value as the sole factor. Adopting that approach now would mean 70 per cent of the listing would be white label test pressings, making this feature a visually dull affair. As a result, in order to ensure some variety and interest remains, we've corralled some rarities with common characteristics into one or two entries, allowing for the inclusion of a lot more new treats.

In 2005, we predicted that there would be no meteoric rise in the asking price for holy grails. While future new entries may yet take us by surprise, this is exactly what's transpired. Premium rarities such as the Reel Around The Fountain white label and Meat Is Murder live EP have not risen in value exponentially, while rarities such as the 7' test pressings for This Charming Man and I Started Something I Couldn't Finish have.

So, what are our next predictions? Well, we're likely to see a steady linear rise in overall values of The Smiths' catalogue. While the global economic crisis has done nothing to curtail the fortunes of these rarities, a more affluent period in the future should boost values over the next decade. Certainly, when the next RC Top 100 comes about in 10 years' time, there'll be a handful of original Smiths fans who will be eligible for their bus passes – former NME journalists at least; 60, clumsy and shy…

COLLECTING THE SMITHS

The market in The Smiths collectables has changed significantly since our last Top 100 in
June 2005. The past eight years has seen some prices rocket, particularly at the top end of the
price scale, most notably test pressings. Driver pack for windows 7 32 bit. More collectors, especially from the US, have entered
the market, pushing up the cost of the rarest test pressings. Unfortunately, higher values
mean a greater chance of items being counterfeited, so be careful. A great source of
information for collectors young and old is www.passionsjustlikemine.com. If the cost of the
top-end items is daunting, a good place to start a collection of The Smiths is with the
coloured vinyl, largely from Germany, most of which is featured within this listing. Prices are
fairly stable, and you'll end up with some beautiful-looking artefacts. Please note, though,
that there has been a glut of newly-pressed coloured vinyl and picture discs that have flooded
the market in recent years. These are actually bootlegs and have no intrinsic value.

Another area of The Smiths collecting that attracts interest is original Rough Trade
promo posters, but prices have risen significantly since 2005. Collecting The Smiths can be
fun and fascinating, and new discoveries are still being made even now, so keep searching!
